Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Former President Donald Trump on midweek demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on his platform early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic party.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of state military troops in the Windy City area following directives from the federal administration, despite strong objections from state officials including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the path to full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, military troops from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the administration advances with its aggressive crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", despite police data indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including murders.

That day, two hundred state guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 state military personnel preparing to mobilize, per sources. Authorities indicated the troops would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard patches were spotted at the military facility in the town. Vehicles labeled "Disaster Relief" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were arranged in lines. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities ordered no-fly zones over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

Federal authorities has intensified deportation operations in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, seeking to block the military dispatch, urging a court to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

The mayor also signed an executive order on that day banning federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

The governor has accused Trump of using troops as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, he said that the president is trying to "justify and make acceptable the presence of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic federal law restricts the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, the president has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to suppress an uprising or are defying national authority.

After beginning his second term, the president has dispatched or discussed deploying troops to over ten urban centers, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the armed forces is necessary to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Data shows that most violent crime across the US has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for example, murders were down nearly one-third to under three hundred through late summer, per law enforcement reports.

New survey data released on that day found that most Americans oppose the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
