The former Brazilian president detained after being deemed a flight risk
The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, his son FlΓ‘vio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
FlΓ‘vio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
