Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
